Beethoven: Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus
Copland: Appalachian Spring
Dvořák: Symphony No. 8
Our season opens — as is our tradition — with a rousing Beethoven overture and an evening that will leave you inspired and excited for the music to come!
This performance will be broadcast live across the Talking Information Center Network, to over 30,000 listeners!
The Creatures of Prometheus (1801) is Ludwig van Beethoven’s only full-length ballet and was an immediate popular success — with more public performances than any of his other works, in his lifetime. Commissioned by the celebrated Italian choreographer and innovator, Salvatore Viganó, the ballet offered Beethoven a thrilling opportunity and inspired many themes he would use in future work. This arresting overture sets the scene for the dramatic story… “Pursued by the mighty wrath of Heaven, Prometheus enters…” The chase is on!
As a counterpoint, Aaron Copland’s beautiful Appalachian Spring (1944) will be performed in its original orchestration. Commissioned by legendary American choreographer Martha Graham, this enduring composition earned Copland a Pulitzer Prize, and defined “the American Sound.” It is as fully dramatic as Beethoven’s overture — and completely different, revealing the drama of the world around us and the astonishing creative genius of Copland’s mind.
Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 (1889) is lyrical, lush, and robust — inspired by the Bohemian folk music Dvořák loved. It was his public “thank you” for being admitted to the Bohemian Academy. His happiness shows… and is very contagious… an excellent, uplifting second half to our Opening Night!
