The Power of Monthly Giving

Harness the Giving Power of a Private Foundation Alternative

A donor advised fund (DAF), is like a charitable savings account. It gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and other qualified charities. You can recommend a grant or recurring grants now to make an immediate impact, or use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts.

You can fund your DAF with cash, appreciated securities, retirement plan assets, tangible personal property, and real estate. Contact your fund administrator for more information.

You can also create a lasting legacy by naming Atlantic Symphony Orchestra the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the fund. Contact your fund administrator for a beneficiary form.

Donor advised funds (DAFs) provide five primary tax benefits to the donor:

Income Tax: You receive an immediate income tax deduction in the year you contribute to your DAF. Since ASO is a public charity, contributions immediately qualify for maximum income tax benefits. The IRS does mandate some limitations, depending upon your adjusted gross income (AGI):
Deduction for cash – up to 60 % of AGI.
Deduction for securities and other appreciated assets – up to 30 % of AGI.
There is a five-year carry-forward for unused deductions.
Capital Gains Tax: You will incur no capital gains tax on gifts of appreciated assets (i.e. securities, real estate, other illiquid assets.)
Estate Tax: Your DAF will not be subject to estate taxes.
Tax-Free Growth: Your investments in a DAF can appreciate tax-free.
Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT): If you are subject to alternative minimum tax (AMT), your contribution will reduce your AMT impact.

Receive a Tax Deduction for Gifts of Securities and Mutual Funds

Securities and mutual funds that have increased in value and been held for more than one year are popular assets to use when making a charitable gift.

A gift of securities or mutual funds to us offers you the chance to support our work while realizing important benefits for yourself.

When you donate appreciated securities or mutual funds you have held more than one year to ASO, you can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains taxes on the transfer. You might also be entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities at the time of the transfer.

Securities are most often used to support our work in the form of an outright gift. When you donate securities to the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, you receive the same income tax savings that you would if you wrote us a check, but with the added benefit of eliminating capital gains taxes on the transfer, which can be as high as 20 percent.

See Your Generosity in Action and Save on Taxes

Make a difference today and save on taxes. It’s possible when you support Atlantic Symphony Orchestra through your IRA.

A Special Opportunity for Those 70½ Years Old and Older

You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Atlantic Symphony Orchestra without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of any value $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference for the orchestra. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Why Consider This Gift?
• Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making.
• Beginning in the year you turn 72, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).
• You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
• Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.
Contact your fund administrator or tax advisor regarding your specific situation.
